This is the first season where Virgil Van Dijk is a full time captain of Liverpool. Although the role is not new for Van Dijk, one Liverpool star has said he is learning from him everyday. The decision of giving him the responsibility has proved out to be a perfect decision till now. The Dutch international has led the team with discipline and commands setting and example for young players. Players like Dominik Szoboszlai are now learning from him.
The 23-year old Hungarian is also the skipper office national team since 2022. He has recently revealed how he learned from previous skippers to fulfill the role. Moreover, now he is learning from his club captain. He said,
“Yes, you can learn from everyone. I have a very good relationship with Sala [Adam Szalai], we talked a lot, he became my friend shortly after I joined the team, and I think he stood his ground very well in this role. We became close to each other, and I learned a lot from him as a person. But I also talked a lot with “Bazsi” [Balazs Dzsudzsak].
He often had a difficult task when he had to stand up after defeats and failures and take responsibility for something that was not necessarily his fault. I appreciate it if someone can do this. Virgil van Dijk has now, at the beginning of this season, become the captain of the Liverpool team. Everyone has a lot of confidence in him. Of course, it’s worth learning something from everyone.”
The Hungarian also said that he wants to set his own example in the role. It will surely be nice for fans seeing Szoboszlai picking up few things from Virgil. He is clearly a leader for his club and country and perhaps he will get this responsibility for Liverpool one day as well.
