Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah admits he was “looking to surpass Joel Matip for a starting spot”. Jarell has been a revelation this season for Liverpool. Although, he is an academy graduate, he has been a pivotal figure for them this season. The Englishman put on a great display in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat in their Europa League fixture. He was arguably the best player in the team that night. Moreover, he even bagged his first goal in a senior Reds outfit.
Speaking to LFCTV after the game, the centre-back admitted that he had been ready for chances to come his way this year. He said,
“At the start of the season when I’ve stayed and not gone on-loan I thought I want to play in these games.
So obviously, it’s a shame what happened to Joel [Matip] and my condolences go to him, but my idea was to try and get over him anyway and try and be a starting centre-back in the Premier League.
I’m just trying to push on and be the best centre-back I can be.”
Jarell has seen a boom in his minutes for the club this season. Although, these are not coming by any accident or injury for him. The self-belief he has in him and his game is clearly visible in the field. He looks much mature than his age when out there. Even the goal he scored, much patience was required for that clinical finish from a defender. Though, it seem a little bit rough for his comments on Matip, it is due to the lack of experience in media. Despite this, if Matip was fit, Quansah has all the qualities to be still picked up in the starting XI.
