According to reports, Liverpool have been handed a major transfer boost in the pursuit of transfer target Jeremy Doku.

Liverpool views Jeremy Doku as the long-term replacement for star winger Mohamad Salah. The Egyptian’s current contact with Liverpool runs only until 2023 and the winger is yet to agree on a new long-term contract with the club. Barcelona are also scouting the young Belgian winger for reinforcing their attacking options.

Jeremy Doku’s father recently talked about Doku’s future and Barcelona interest, he said:

Current Premier League Standings

“We have not heard anything from Barcelona yet.

“That doesn’t seem right to me. I don’t think Barcelona are in a position to spend big transfer fees right now.

“There are many other clubs who want Jérémy. Although I am not allowed to say anything about that.

I don’t think he wants to change (clubs) yet but, in football, everything can change quickly. It depends on which team shows interest”

Doku featured in 30 Ligue 1 matches last term and registered two goals and further set up three goals for his teammates. However this season, he has been restricted to just four league appearances due to injury issues.

With Barcelona potentially out of the race, Liverpool seems the only club with a real interest in the Belgian winger. While the Reds could make a movie for Doku in the January transfer window.

Why Liverpool need Jeremy Doku?

Liverpool are set to be without star winger duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for the first month of 2022. As the duo will be participating in the African Cup of Nations with their respective nations Egypt and Senegal.

Following this, Jeremy Doku can add some much-needed depth to the Liverpool squad, if signed in January. Liverpool’s star front three, Salah, Mane, and Firmino all have contracts that expire in 2023 and whether they will sign a new contract still remains a question. Doku can hence be an option for the present and future of the football club and be the long-term successor for the ageing frontline.

Jurgen Klopp‘s Liverpool were linked with Doku over the summer, after the young winger’s impressive display with his national side Belgium in the European Championships. While the Reds were also keen on Doku when he was at Anderlecht during the 2017/18 season. It seems like Liverpool now have a real chance to land the man they have been chasing since 2017 in the January transfer window.
