Liverpool urged to avoid signing Douglas Luiz or Tielemans

Former Liverpool player and legend Steve Mcmanaman advises against the signings

Liverpool have had only one player as reinforcement in the midfield in the form of Arthur Melo from Juventus on loan. Liverpool are watching and waiting to get their hands on Jude Bellingham, the Dortmund wonderkid, as their primary midfielder. However, it is well known that Dortmund will charge a very high transfer fee for the 19-year-old. On the other hand, midfielders such as Douglas Luiz and/or Yuri Tielemans could be cheaper alternatives to Bellingham.

However, Steve McManaman, the former winger for Liverpool, is of the opinion that the two midfielders do not possess the necessary quality to play for the Reds. Speaking to Horseracing.net, Mcmanaman said:

“I’m not convinced it will be a smart bit of business by Liverpool to move for Douglas Luiz. This is regardless of whether his contract is expiring or not. I think he’s a good player, but I believe he needs to be quicker in a lot of the things he does to suit the style of football that Liverpool play. You want to sign players that can get in Liverpool starting eleven and not just players who want to come and sit in a squad.”

Speaking about Tielemans, he added:

“Youri Tielemans’ contract is also set to expire at the same time, but if you’re to play for the best teams in Europe, it’s hard to find the right players that will improve your side. I don’t want to be disparaging towards either of these two players because they’re good Premier League players. Are they good enough to get in the starting line-up of Liverpool? I just don’t think so at the moment.”

Liverpool are currently sixth in the league after a string of disappointing performances. Fatigue, lack of layers in the midfield, and lack of intensity have seen them off to a stuttering start.
