Brentford striker Ivan Toney has expressed his admiration for Liverpool and star player Virgil Van Dijk. In a recent interview with Kick Game, when asked about the toughest defenders he has faced in the league, Toney spoke about Virgil Van Dijk while admitting he is a Liverpool fan. “I’m a Liverpool fan, so Van Dijk is one of the bests, he has to be there up as well,” quoted Ivan.

Ivan Toney had a season of mixed emotions last season. With 20 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League, Toney was one of the most crucial players in Brentford’s success in the league. His prolific display had the rumors suggesting that a big money move might be on the cards for him.

But while Toney was incredibly responsible on the pitch, he was very reckless off it. He was charged with 262 breaches of FA rule as a result of which he is currently facing an eight month ban from all football-related activities. This quashed all the transfer rumors surrounding him. However, his fascination of the Reds has again sparked the transfer rumors, with some reports suggesting that Toney might be heading to Anfield in the summer of 2024.

Is Toney to Liverpool a possibility?

Despite the rumors, it seems highly unlikely that Klopp would be looking to add Ivan Toney in his side. Even with departure of the club legend Roberto Firmino, Klopp has a great variety of attacking players to choose from. The recent signings of Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez seems to have sorted out Liverpool’s attack for the next few seasons.

While only coming in January, Gakpo had a good start to his Liverpool career, with 7 goals and 2 assists. He is being looked as Firmino’s successor as he is preferred by Klopp to play in the middle as a false 9. Darwin Nunez also had a bright start to his Liverpool career. The Uruguayan registered 15 goals and 3 assists last season. His speed, attack positioning and aggression reminded the fans of Luis Suarez. Even though his performance last season didn’t live up to the expectations, there’s no doubt about the quality he provides for Liverpool. Klopp and fans are looking forward to these two have their breakout seasons in the next one.

Therefore, it seems quite clear that Ivan Toney’s move to Liverpool may not make sense. Liverpool do not have enough room for another attacker in their side and neither do they need it. Also Ivan Toney has proved with his performances in the last two seasons that he can become one of the best strikers. However that’s only possible if he starts regularly and gets enough minutes on the pitch, which seems almost impossible at Liverpool.
