Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has faced major criticism following the defeat against Leicester City in the Premier League. Many Manchester United fans have questioned Ole Gunnar’s tactics and even called for the sack.

Manchester United have lost four of their previous seven fixtures in all competitions. The recent league defeat at Leicester City had many Manchester United fans questioning if Ole Gunnar is the right head coach to lead the team forward.

Ole Gunnar just signed a new three-year deal in July 2021 with an option to extend for another year. Manchester United hierarchy is still backing Ole Gunnar and hoping that the results will improve.

According to reports, Ole Gunnar has a lot of credit in the bank at the board level due to his extraordinary work still initially arriving as the intern Manchester United head coach.

But stances in football can change really quickly. If the results do not improve the Manchester United hierarchy may change their stance and look for replacements for Ole Gunnar.

Current favourites to take over from Ole Gunnar at Manchester United

Brendan Rodgers

Current status: Leicester City head coach (contract until 2025)

It would be ironic that the Leicester City manager would be the man to replace Ole Gunnar. After his Leicester team defeated Manchester United 4-2 on Saturday. Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool past can be held against him by United fans while consideration for the Manchester United head coach job.

Rodgers is regarded as one of the best managers in the Premier League. He has a proven track record of working with young players and improving others around them.

His work at Leicester over the past two seasons speaks for itself. If Rodgers was to get the United job he would certainly improve the likes of Marcus Rashard, Mason Greenwood and the new big-money signing Jadon Sancho.

Zinedine Zidane

Current status: Without a club

Zinedine Zidane is without a club since the end of last season when he left Real Madrid. The job at Manchester United can be perfect for Zidane as it isn’t a ‘rebuild job’. Zidane led Real Madrid to three successive Champions League titles.

With Zidane as the Manchester United head coach, it would be a big boost for the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Varane and Paul Pogba. To United’s advantage, Zidane is without a club still. But to Manchester United’s expense, Zidane is holding out on the France national team job according to rumours.

Erik ten Hag

Current status: Ajax head coach (contract until 2023)

There is no denying what a fantastic job Erik ten Hag has done at Ajax. Erik ten Hag has enjoyed huge success with Ajax in recent years. He also led Ajax to the fantastic run to the Champions League semi-final in 2019.

The dutch coach at Ajax has prioritised player development and preached an overarching philosophy. Manchester United hierarchy over the past 3 seasons has tried to reimplement the same things.

With Erik as the head coach, Donny van de Beek may finally get some game time and get his career back on track. Having previously played under him at Ajax. Erik ten Hag could very well turn out to be the perfect fit to lead Manchester United forward.

Antonio Conte

Current status: Without a club

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss is currently the favourite to take over the Manchester United job. Conte won the league last season with Inter Milan. He is a proven winner, winning the Premier League, FA Cup with Chelsea during his time in England.

Conte could be exactly who Manchester United are looking to replace Ole Gunnar. Manchester United haven’t won a trophy in the past 4 seasons, coming closes in the UEFA Europa League deadbeat against Villareal last season. And Conte can certainly take Manchester United over the line and end the trophy drought at the club.

Other mangers linked to the Manchester United job?

The likes of current England manager Gareth Southgate, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simone, Laurent Blanc have all been linked to the Manchester United job. PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has also been once again linked to the United job. Manchester United hierarchy regards Pochettino very highly and could very turn to Pochettino and finally get him as the United head coach.
