Manchester City can create another defender like Ruben Diaz by signing Matthijs De Ligt

Ruben Dias completed his move to Manchester City in September 2020. The center-back arrived from Benfica on a move worth £65m. Since his arrival, he has solidified himself into Pep’s first team. He is Manchester City’s first choice as a central defender and a solid and dependable defensive option. He has made 89 appearances for Pep Guardiola across all competitions.

In those appearances, Dias has managed to score three goals and provide 5 assists. He has also won two Premier League titles with City.

Now, with the summer transfer window open, Manchester City should be looking to continue this cycle. And, the most likely player to carry out a successful saga like this again is the central defender Matthijs De Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt player profile and transfer rumors

Chelsea are pursuing the signature of Matthijs De Ligt quite fervently. Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are leaving the club as free agents. This means Chelsea has a sort of crisis in its defense the next year unless they fail to sign someone. Chelsea were pursuing Jules Kounde very heavily last summer but, this interest seems to have cooled down. Now Matthijs De Ligt is their defensive priority.

However, according to the rumors, Manchester City were also planning for a summer swoop for the defender. A 22-year-old playing fantastically in one of Europe’s top teams is bound to attract the attention of the clubs. Matthijs de Ligt can pull a Ruben Dias and move to the Premier League in search of greater glory. De Ligt has been labeled as a player that “can’t be stopped” by Mino Raiola. He most certainly has what it takes to have a similar sort of impact at Manchester City that Dias has had since his arrival.

The center-back rose through the ranks of the Ajax youth academy. HE had a brilliant campaign under ten Hag at Ajax. De Ligt scored 13 times and provided seven assists at Ajax. In 2019, De Ligt completed a move to Italy for an initial fee of £67.8m

The center-back has made 117 appearances for Juventus. He has scored eight goals and assisted three times for the Italian giants. Manchester City doesn’t need a center-back as urgently as Chelsea does. Moreover, if they want to plan for the future, then securing a deal for De Ligt could be a very smart long-term investment by the club
