Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of completing the signing of Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig. Despite the rumours of some ‘major problems’, it finally looks like the deal is about to happen. The English Champions have not had a busy summer in the transfer market, with the club only signing Mateo Kovaciç so far. Most likely their next transfer move is going to be the signing of Gvardiol.
The 21-year old centre back burst onto the scene during the 2022 World Cup. His performance was very impressive and he was as an integral part in Croatia finishing at the 3rd place in the WC. Even with his club Leipzig, Gvardiol had a great season, as a result of which, many big clubs were interested in signing the defender.
It was reported that Premier League clubs Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea were going to battle it out with City in the race to sign the Croatian. However, Pep Guardiola’s side have been Gvardiol’s priority, because of which City have always been the favourites to sign him.
What was the Fabrizio Romano saga in the deal?
Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano, who is a very trustable source of transfer news, caused a ‘big problem‘ in the deal. A few weeks ago, Romano revealed details of the deal, about which the clubs apparently were trying to be discrete. Romano revealed that a verbal agreement in place, with City having also booked a medical for the player. After this ‘leak‘, it was reported by multiple sources that the deal is not at all close, refuting Romano’s claims. Romano was pointed out by many users on social media for ‘missing the mark‘ in this deal.
What is the latest update on the deal?
Despite the problems, Romano has remained firm on his news in this deal. In a recent interview, the Italian journalist stated that the deal is very much still on and is pretty close. A fee of around €90 million will be paid by Man City to sign Gvardiol from Leipzig.
Talking to CaughtOffside, Romano said, ” As I revealed two weeks ago, a verbal agreement was in place. The medical was booked and then the leak of the story caused a big problem between Leipzig and Man City. They want to complete every single detail of this story by the end of the week, it is absolutely on and is advancing.”
