Manchester City eyeing down Hee-chan move: A worth it deal for Pep?

As per recent reports, Manchester City are interested in signing forward Hwang Hee-Chan on a permanent deal. The Sky Blues would reportedly rival out Liverpool in their pursuit for the player.

Hwang Hee-Chan is currently on loan with Wolverhampton Wanderers from RB Leipzig. Wolves have signed the player this season under the management of Bruno Lage. The South Korean forward has now become a sensation in the Premier League and Wolves are desperate to sign him on a permanent deal.

As a result of his consistent performances, Hwang has drawn the attention of several big clubs including City and Liverpool. His top-class game display could see him make a move to a bigger club next season.

Hwang Hee-Chan could sort Man City’s forward issues

While the player is on a season-long deal with the Wolves, he has not sat back to show his class. In 8 PL games this season, Hwang has scored 4 goals after a brisk start to the season. He also scored in his debut game against Watford after coming off the bench. (stats via PREMIER LEAGUE)

The 25 years old player was initially believed to be a short-term replacement for the Wanderers’ Raul Jiminez. The Mexican had returned after a long-term head injury and needed proper time management.

However, in a short while, the South Korean player has shown that he is not meant to sit out. He now accompanies Jiminez as the team’s left-winger and has produced good results with his explosiveness. He takes on defenders one on one with his pace and is currently the Wolves’ highest goal scorer this season.

Could Hee-Chan fit in Pep Guardiola’s system?

Even though Hwang Hee-Chan is a top performer, the 25-year-old forward would simply fail to fit in the Manchester City system. Given his playing style of dribbling with pace, it would be hard to get involved in Guardiola’s possession-based gameplay.

The player has the ability to be a playmaker and creates spaces by taking away defenders with his pace. While that is a great asset, a possession-based system is usually an off-the-ball game. Quickly moving the ball around reduces the chance to dribble the ball which would deem the South Korean ineffective.

On the other hand, Manchester City already has quality wingers like Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez who are well established and suited to the game. Although Hwang has the ability to link up with other players, he would simply struggle around top players due to the pressure to perform.

Hence, the forward is well suited to a team like Liverpool who tries to play the ball quickly in the opposition box. Complemented by his pace, the Red Devils could look to strengthen their fast counter-attacking style as well. As far as Man City is concerned, they must opt for someone who can keep a hold of the ball well and fits into a position based style of play.
