Manchester City interested in signing Sergi Roberto

Manchester City are reportedly keen to sign Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto on a free transfer next summer.

The 29-year-old’s existing deal at Camp Nou is due to expire in June 2022. Barcelona are yet to agree an extension with the Spain international.

As it stands, foreign clubs would be free to approach Roberto at the start of next year to discuss a pre-contract. According to Calciomercato, Man City are monitoring the situation.

The report claims that Manchester City will approach Sergi Roberto in January 2022 if he still has not penned a new deal at Camp Nou by the turn of the year.

Do Manchester City need Sergi Roberto?

Roberto has been with Barcelona since 2006, having joined La Masia from Gimnastic Tarragona. In three years’ time, the Spanish international graduated from the youth setup to the reserve side. Although, it was not until the 2013/14 season that Roberto finally broke into the first-team squad.

Manchester City are eyeing the Barcelona utility man as a potential option in midfield. With Fernandinho into the last years of his illustrious career, there is a need to replace him. A move for Roberto makes sense, and therefore he is a viable target for Manchester City.

What now remains to be seen is if Barcelona make an attempt to secure the long-term future of Roberto in the weeks and months to come. However, if by the turn of the year, a renewal has not been agreed, it will not be surprising to see City pouncing for his signature.

Roberto has made 311 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 12 times and contributing 37 assists along the way. Roberto has entered the last year of his deal with the club. This term, the midfielder has scored twice and provided one assist in seven outings in all competitions.

The Spaniard is into the final year of his contract. His situation at Barcelona has now piqued the interest of Manchester City and Arsenal as well.
