Manchester City looking to use Kalvin Philips in a new role

Pep Guardiola

After the recent departure of key wingbacks in the form of Cancelo and Zinchenko, Manchester City are looking towards Kalvin Phillips to fill in the shoes. Zinchenko moved to Arsenal last summer. Now, Joao Cancelo, who is often regarded as one of the best young wingbacks completed a move to Bayern Munich. This has raised a few questions regarding the player’s relationship with the gaffer. Pep has made his intentions clear in a recent statement, about not signing any replacement for the recently departed Portuguese.

In the past, we have seen Pep Guardiola being flexible about the position of his players. This has often improved the overall versatility of the squad. After, Rodri‘s impressive run of form in the middle of the park, it is tough to see a spot for Kalvin Philips in the first team barring any injury setback. However, following the recent departures of Zinchenko and Cancelo, the 27-year-old can find a new role as a wing-back. We are well aware of the Englishman’s defensive qualities. He has also been used as center back for a brief period during the pre-season.

Adaptability factor

Pep has always liked wingbacks who are ready to chip into the midfield when necessary. Kalvin being a natural midfielder would fit into that role perfectly. The Englishman is also a natural ball-winner and is quite comfortable on the ball. Although there has been no official statement yet, this role could prove to be beneficial for both player and the manager.
