Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is set to leave the club after serving the club for six years.

He was Pep Guardiola’s first signing when he took over the reins of the club from Manuel Pellegrini.

The German has still one year left on his contract but he has been asked by the authorities to look for another club.

City signed the 31-year-old back in 2016 from Borussia Dortmund. The English powerhouses bought the German for £21million.

Gundogan has since then played 156 games for City. In that tenure, he has succeeded in scoring 34 goals and assisting 12.

Moreover, his best season was probably the previous one where he scored 17 goals and assisted 5 times.

However, he has been plagued with injuries in his playing career. This saw him not being on the list of top three midfielders this season for his club.

Where the midfielder could be going next?

There have not been any concrete links with any top clubs in Europe till now. Moreover, no club has still now, not shown any interest in the player.

However, last month while speaking about his future playing destination, he told Sport1:

Because of my roots, Turkey is naturally interesting. I also like the USA, I’ve been there on vacation several times.”

This could very well point towards where he is going to play next season. These hints definitely show that he is not going to be playing in the Premier League next season.

However, the Daily Mail reports that Gundogan was spotted boarding a private jet to Madrid from Manchester on Monday morning.

Therefore, as Real Madrid tried to sign him when he was at Dortmund, it is presumed that this time again they are planning on acquiring the player.

The purpose of the trip, however, has not been known.

Gundogan has served the club loyally for all these years and the fans would lament the leaving of this star midfielder.
