Michael Owen have expressed his worries after the Cody Gakpo news emerged. Michael Owen hopes that the Gakpo deal would not affect Liverpool‘s quest in signing Jude Bellingham. PSV confirmed the news on Twitter after Liverpool won their opening match against Aston Villa. The Reds had beaten Manchester United in the transfer race for Gakpo. Furthermore, the former English striker Michael Owen described Gakpo as a ‘very good signing’ for Liverpool. But he also raised concerns about Liverpool’s lack of midfield magic this season. The Reds would be looking to sign more midfielders this transfer window.

Michael Owen comments on Cody Gakpo’s transfer to Liverpool

Cody Gakpo was one of the shining stars at the FIFA World Cup. The player became the first Dutch player to ever score in every group stage match. The Netherlands were ruthlessly knocked out of the World Cup in the Quarterfinals by eventual winners Argentina. Nonetheless, when the transfer news for Gakpo broke out, Michael Owen expressed his concerns about Liverpool’s interest in Jude Bellingham. While Owen liked the Gakpo signing, he commented,

“Initial reaction is that Liverpool have been desperate for a midfielder for some time now, it’s an ageing midfield, it’s a good midfield, but ageing, A midfielder has been key for some time. I just hope it doesn’t mean that Jude Bellingham isn’t going to be somebody on the wishlist come the summer.”

He further added,

“But first thing is first, Gakpo had a fantastic World Cup. 23-year-old, it brings the age of the team down, it looks like a very good signing.”

Moreover, with Luiz Diaz suffering from a fresh injury after the World Cup and Diogo Jota still being out, the Reds would be hoping for Gakpo to impress at Anfield. Although Gakpo can play across the front three without any hitch. He might have to take up that important role sooner than expected.
