Fabrizio Romano confirms that Newcastle United have signed the Lille defender

Newcastle United have agreed to a deal with Lille for 22-year-old defender Sven Boatman. The Magpies have been chasing for the Boatman’s signature since January. He is Eddie Howe’s number one target for the defense at Tyneside. However, Lille have held firm over its asking price for the player.

Now, this has spilled into the summer transfer window. Finally, reports have emerged of a breakthrough by Newcastle. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the deal is done.

Romano has confirmed on Twitter, that Boatman can be considered a Newcastle player. The personal terms have also been agreed to and a medical has also been booked.

The transfer saga of the Magpies

Boatman is going to be Newcastle’s marquee signing this summer. PIF is keen to back Eddie Howe in the market. They have proved this by paying more than £30m for the defender. The dutchman Sven Boatman is considered as one of Europe’s top up-and-coming defenders. Newcastle will be keen to develop and help the player blossom to his full potential.

With this signing, Eddie Howe has recruited players for all the positions in defense since taking charge of the club in December. In January he acquired the full-back for England, Kieran Trippier, and central defender from Brighton, Dan Burns. Left-back Matt Target arrived as a loan from Aston Villa. The signing has been made permanent now.

Nick Pope has also joined Newcastle from Burnley. Burnley were relegated into the championship last season. However, Howe is adamant that this will “not be the revolution that everyone thinks it will be”. Newcastle is building a solid foundation for the future. Nick Pope and Sven Boatman are testaments to that fact.

Boatman is a bright talent. He has been exceptional for Lille and Howe will be hoping that he carries this exceptional act out here. Moreover, this means that Newcastle United are slowly developing into a club which can lure in some of Europe’s best players.
