Sandro Tonali has been given a 2-month suspended sentence and fined £20K for betting breaches while at Newcastle. He can start playing in late August and as long as he doesn’t break betting rules next season, the suspension will be dropped. Tonali joined Newcastle United in a £55m move from AC Milan in the summer. He is currently banned from competitive football until August 2024 for betting on matches in Italy. The Newcastle’s player was then charged with 50 further breaches of FA Rule E8. For placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023, after he had joined the Magpies.

The fact that he has admitted all his breaches openly and cooperated with the authorities has helped him and it reflects well on the player who has trained all season with the Newcastle squad.

Club’s statement on Newcastle’s player

This is what Newcastle United put out on their website yesterday about the new suspended ban:

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football. He is suspended by an independent Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting Rules.

He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his future conduct.

The banning period is fully suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season. However he will be available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of an existing ten-month sanction. It is imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.

Moreover if he does not commit any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension period. Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.

After all as acknowledged by the FA in the independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and unprecedented.

Sandro made full admissions as to his betting activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other evidence to support misconduct proceedings.

Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club’s full support and will continue to train with his teammates.
