Pablo Mari proving to be a worse deal than Mustafi

Pablo Mari looks to be a worse deal than Mustafi. Arsenal signed Pablo Mari during the 2020 January tranfer window. He has had a few purple patches at Arsenal. He was excellent for Flamengo and has worked with Arteta previously at City. This is the reason why Arsenal signed him. He also pocketed Salah in that editions club World Cup final.

Pablo Mari to leave Arsenal soon and could be labelled worse than Mustafi

The signing has not worked out for both the parties. He is now being sent on loan for the 2nd season in a row. Although he has been having a good outing on loan he will be sold the coming summer window. Arteta wanted a left-footed centre-back when arrived at Arsenal that’s why he signed Mari. Now they have Gabriel Maghalaes and they new signing Jakub Kiwior.

Whilst most of the business done since his 2020 appointment would deservedly be praised. Mari is actually the 1st transfer of the Arteta reign that has arguably failed him. The decision to sign an unknown Spanish centre-back for £12m had raised eyebrows at the time. But few could have predicted just how troublesome Pablo Mari would find adapting to the English game.

Future for Mari

He spent the this whole season in Italy playing for Monza, his 6.85 average rating is solid but isn’t spectacular. However, with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes for competition at Arsenal. He is way far from the required standard the defender needs to be at to actually challenge for a place at the Emirates stadium.

The £88k-per-week player will leave north London having made a total of 22 appearances for the club. Perhaps for the best for both parties. His legacy could be worse that of Mustafi’s. Mari will adapt himself to a slower paced league. That is why he is doing well in Italy. He can’t handle the pace of the Premier League. But he could turn out to be a decent defender for some of the other clubs in the top 5 league’s.
