Postecoglou praised Martinez for his heroics against Spurs

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou praised Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for his heroics against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Speaking to Viaplay, Postecoglou explains that small margins in the defeat against Villa. Despite the defeat, the manager was happy with his side’s overall performance.

Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoresheet for the home time with a great strike from outside the box. The Argentine’s last goal for Tottenham came in November, 2020 against Manchester City.

However, Pau Torres levelled the scoreline with a header deep into first-half added time. Ollie Watkins then sealed the game for the visitors with his 12th goal of the current campaign.

Postecoglou calls Martinez an “outstanding goalkeeper”

Despite their defeat, Ange Postecoglou was happy with his side’s overall performance on Sunday. He praised Martinez for keeping many Spurs attempt out of the goal and said :-

“You created the chances but is that a matter of personal but also confidence to put those chances in?

“It’s not an exact science. You have an outstanding goalkeeper in the other goal who is doing the best to keep them out, there’s some goalposts which play a part.

“You’re talking very small margins and we all know that scoring goals in the most difficult thing.

“So like I said for me the most important thing was that I was disappointed with our performance against Wolves but today we played our football and if we continue down that road we will get the rewards for how we play.”

Earlier reports suggested Emiliano Martinez was likely to leave Villa in the summer transfer window. But the Argentine international stayed back at the club.

Postecoglou praised the shot-stopper and pointed out that Martinez was the main difference in a match between two top teams in the division. However, Spurs will be worried about their current form after three consecutive defeats in the league.
