Reece James And His Chelsea Contract Situation

Chelsea are in no hurry to offer Reece James a new contract, the Daily Mirror understands. The English wingback still has three years remaining on his current deal, which has made him a low priority in terms of renewals. Fellow Cobham graduate Mason Mount on the other hand will be out of contract in two years, so his new contract is in the works.

Although by no means alarming, teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid are monitoring the right wingback. Reece James has now been an integral part of Thomas Tuchel’s side. The defender has been a goal threat in his system, scoring 5 goals and registering 9 assists. As another testament to his brilliance, he got these numbers while missing more than a third of games with an injury.

Chelsea struggled without his output during that time, leading to a mid-season collapse. The Blues competed for the title at one point, but lengthy injuries to James and Ben Chilwell led to a massive drop-off. In the end, They finished 18 points adrift of second-place Liverpool, only 5 ahead of 5th place Arsenal.

Seeing how much Chelsea struggled without James, Tuchel may be looking for reinforcements in his position. Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly being monitored. A new wingback becomes even more important when you consider the departure of Cesar Azpelecueta and Marcos Alonso.

Alternative Options For James

Although James seems committed to Chelsea at the moment, it will not be entirely wrong to speculate about a transfer in the near future. As mentioned above, Manchester City and Real Madrid seem the most interested in his services

City will be looking for a new right-back as Kyle Walker is 32 years old. The former Spurs man has spent 5 years at the Etihad now, and Pep may be looking for a replacement. Joao Cancelo can play there too, but Guardiola prefers him in an inverted role on the left-hand side. As such, James can be the perfect replacement. He shares Walker’s dynamism while being a little more refined in the final third.

Chelsea will be reluctant to sell a valuable asset to a direct rival though. Real Madrid can be another option. Dani Carvajal too is on the wrong side of thirty and has been plagued by constant injuries. James can be a reliable option for them.

Chelsea will not want to lose a supreme talent like Reece James. He is young and one of the best in the business right now. The new owners should look into his contract situation at the earliest and ensure he stays at Stamford Bridge for the years to come.
