Will Kalvin Phillips manage to get more game time under Pep Guardiola?

Pep Guardiola

Kalvin Phillips made a big move to Manchester City last summer for a reported fee of £45 million. He had been an integral part of Leeds United’s midfield and was playing for them consistently. However, since joining Manchester City, he has struggled to get minutes on the pitch. The lack of game time for Kalvin Phillips can be based on his battle against one of the best defensive midfielders in the world Rodri. Pep Guardiola has preferred Rodri in most games throughout the season and as a result, Phillips has struggled to get game time. The Spanish manager has built one of the most formidable teams in Premier League history. And so, Phillips must find his place among them if he wants to make an impact at Man City. It certainly won’t be easy but it will be intriguing to see how he fares in the coming months.

How has Phillips managed to get more game time in the England National team than City?

It’s been a surprise to see that Kalvin Phillips has managed to get more minutes on the pitch as an International player for England than he has in the City shirt. Despite rustiness due to lack of game time, it was a surprise to see that Gareth Southgate picked Phillips in one of their most difficult games against Italy. As it panned out, the decision was a good one as England were able to beat Italy 2 goals to 1 in the Euro Qualifier.

It will be interesting to see what lies ahead in the future of Kalvin Phillips. The point guard is a tenacious and dependable midfield player. But will he be able to break into a midfield full of world-class talents like Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Ilkay Gundogan? Will Pep give him a chance when it matters most? These questions have to be answered if we are to accurately gauge Kalvin’s future at Man City.
