Willian was called crazy by his friends for tearing up his lucrative Arsenal contract

Willian has admitted that his friends called him crazy for tearing up his lucrative Arsenal contract. The Brazilian winger left the Gunners two years before his contract expired.

However, the move was a surprise to many fans and plaudits. The termination of the deal was done by mutual consent of both parties.

WILLIAN AND HIS EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING FOR ARSENAL

Willian has told to Athletic news website in an interview that his friends called him crazy. They called him crazy for tearing his lucrative contract with Gunners. The Brazilian winger signed for the Gunners on a free transfer. He started his career with the London side with a hattrick of assists against Fulham. However, after that, he could not keep up the level of his performance.

He was then linked with a move away from the Gunners. However, no side could not afford to pay a transfer fee and his high wages. Hence, the winger took the surprising step of tearing his Arsenal contract two years before his expiry. The contract termination was mutual consent of both sides. Many reports also confirmed that the winger walked away from his £20M contract as he terminated his contract with the Gunners. Many Gunners termed him a good man for not asking a penny from the club.

THE BRAZILIAN WINGER WAS TERMED CRAZY BY HIS FRIENDS FOR TERMINATING THE CONTRACT

The decision was not understood by Willian’s friends. He admits that many of his friends called him crazy for walking away from the deal. He said,

There were a lot who told me this, even people from Brazil,” Willian adds. “They’d say; ‘Don’t come, don’t come, you have to stay! You’re crazy!’.“But it was something I wanted to try, to play for Corinthians, the club I grew up playing for. So that’s why I left. I was comfortable with my choice.”

After the experience of Arsenal, he joined his boyhood club Corinthians. However, the move was even worse than his Gunner’s move. The move was so bad that some Corinthians fans sent him death threats for not performing for the club. This resulted in Willian again terminating his contract in Brazil. He then again returned to London to join Fulham on a free transfer after a successful trial.

Willian played well in Fulham’s win against Nottingham Forest. However, based on his Arsenal experience, he has a long season before terming his stint a success. Marco Silva has started well with Fulham. They are currently 6th on the Premier League table at the international break.
