Alan Shearer criticised Gareth Southgate for not allowing Chelsea’s Levi Colwill a chance to play last night against Scotland from the bench.

Alan Shearer talked about England’s 3-1 victory at Hampden Park while speaking on The Rest Is Football.

With players like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Kyle Walker all putting in strong performances, there were many positives for Southgate to take away from last night’s game.

Lewis Dunk and Marc Guehi were inserted at center-back against Scotland. The England manager decided to make a few changes from the team that drew 1-1 in Ukraine on Saturday. At halftime, Harry Maguire took over for Guehi. The Manchester United defender promptly scored an own goal to give Scotland a chance to recover in the second half. Furthermore, Alan Shearer thinks that Southgate ought to have given either Levi Colwill or Fikayo Tomori a chance to replace Maguire last night.

Alan Shearer was not happy with Southgate’s decisions

Alan Shearer was not at all pleased with Southgate’s decision to select Maguire over Colwill and Tomori. He said

“My only thing would be is that you’re putting Harry Maguire into the team. I know he started on the weekend, he’s put him on again tonight. The two guys on the bench, Tomori and Colwill, What are they sat there thinking?”

Alan Shearer continued saying

“We’ve said it before, I know Harry’s done well for Gareth in the past, great professional but then Gareth chucks him tonight. You have to feel for him because clearly, he’s not match-fit because he hasn’t played matches. He doesn’t sort his feet out [for the won goal]. So, then the other two lads are thinking ‘Hang on, what have we got to do here?”

Alan Shearer further added

“It’s a friendly game against Scotland, you’ve started him in the qualifier game. Why don’t you put one of us on at half-time instead of him? That’s what I’d be thinking. What have we got to do to get a game here?”

After spending the previous season on loan at Brighton, Colwill has shown promise over the past year. In fact, over the summer, teams like Liverpool and the Seagulls expressed interest in the defender. Levi Colwill is valued at £40 million. However, Chelsea was eager to hang onto their academy product, and he appears to have a promising career ahead of him.

The substitution of Maguire for Guehi last night wasn’t particularly shocking. However, it’s tough to disagree with Alan Shearer because one have to question whether Colwill will have the opportunity to shine under Southgate.
