Arsenal are in desperate need of a striker. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was sold to Barcelona for nothing in the January window, while Alexander Lacazette and Edward Nketiah are on their way out this summer. This makes it crucial for them to get a reliable goalscorer up front.
It seems though that they have identified one candidate for the role. The Metro claim that ex-Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham is on Mikel Arteta’s shortlist this summer. Abraham moved to AS Roma this summer where he has excelled under another man with Chelsea associations:
Jose Mourinho. After being left in the periphery of Thomas Tuchel’s squad in West London, the England international has proved his critics wrong. His return of 17 goals for the Giallorossi has been quite impressive. He also led them to their first trophy in 14 years, the Europa Conference League. Now, there is a prospect of a return to London.
The striker has a contract until 2026. His goals have made him a key component in Jose Mourinho’s system and a loved player in The Eternal City. It will be a difficult job to pry him away from Roma after a single season, not to mention the money which will be involved.
Alternatives To Tammy Abraham
If not Tammy Abraham, Arsenal are in for Gabriel Jesus as well. Arteta has worked with Jesus during his time with Manchester City and will know him well. Antonio Conte’s Tottenham are also interested in the Brazilian. Another option on the list is Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, but they face competition from Manchester United.
It will be interesting to see how Arsenal’s striker hunt develops. It is no secret that their last few strikers have been rather goal-shy. Aubameyang and Lacazette have had dismal campaigns in the previous two seasons, while Nketiah was not given a proper chance.
With talented options like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Emile Smith Rowe on the wings, a deadly striker who can compliment them would make Arsenal’s frontline a frightening prospect.
