Connor Gallagher’s move to Villa Park could form a formidable duo of McGinn and Gallagher for Steven Gerrard.
Aston Villa had a pretty eventful season last year. To say this, is an understatement. The club started with an intent to challenge for European places but their intent fizzled out midway. Their manager, Dean Smith was fired and replaced by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. Gerrard had a decent start but failed to capitalize on it. The next season couldn’t come sooner for Villa players, manager, and fans.
Last season, Aston Villa saw a score of new players join the club during the summer and winter transfer window. However, one figure was prominent in Villa’s campaign this season and that player is John McGinn. Only Matty Cash and Tyrone Mings played more minutes than McGinn last season. This emphasizes the usefulness of McGinn. He is also a very versatile player and can be used in both defensive and attacking sense.
Connor Gallagher also had a standout season with Crystal Palace this summer. A product of Cobham, Gallagher took the League by storm with his blistering pace and amazing stamina. His impressive performance led him to a call-up for the English national team.
There are a lot of doubts surrounding the midfielder regarding his team next season. Amidst this doubt, Aston Villa is preparing to make an offer for the English international this summer.
McGinn and Gallagher can be a very scary midfield duo.
McGinn has been useful in the Aston Villa middle as a defensive as well as an offensive player. In terms of his attacking presence, no other Villa player racked up more shot-creating actions (96) than the midfielder, McGinn also made more successful dribbles (41) than any of his teammates.
From a defensive point of view, the midfielder won more tackles (61) than any other player in Gerrard’s squad, in addition to making 52 interceptions. These stats are proof that he is a key player at Villa Park.
Connor Gallagher scored eight goals in 34 premier league appearances for the Eagles. He also recorded three assists. Only Wilfried Zaha (104) produced more shot-creating actions than Gallagher (89). From a defensive point of view, only Tyrick Mitchell (187) ended the season with a higher combined total of tackles and interceptions in the league than the 22-year-old (112).
Having both McGinn and Gallagher on the same side as two well-rounded midfielders who are capable of going forward and defending their own goal, would be a massive asset for Villa as a team. However, it is unlikely that it will happen
According to many rumors, Gallagher has impressed Thomas Tuchel immensely. He is reportedly in Thomas Tuchel’s plan for Chelsea next year. Gallagher is an important asset for Chelsea. He is young and an engine in the midfield. It is very unlikely that Chelsea will part ways with the midfielder that easily.
