According to recent reports, Aston Villa have successfully completed the signing of Everton defender Lucas Digne. Following his medicals in Birmingham, the two clubs have reached the final agreement for the player.

The Villans are making stunning deals over the January transfer window. Last week, the club signed Philippe Coutinho from FC Barcelona on loan. The deal also involves a buy option clause for €40m at the end of the season. Following this move, Aston Villa have signed the France international for a €27m fee.

Danny Ings was another one to join earlier this season from Southampton. Digne is likely to take Matt Targett’s right-back spot at Villa Park, although he can also play in the left-midfield position.

What Digne can offer to Gerrard

Former Paris Saint-Germain and Barca player, Digne is taken to be one of the best full-backs in the English league. The 28-years-old left-back has spent the majority of his career at the Goodison Park and has been one of the most important players for the Toffees.

Since his move to the Merseyside outfit in 2018, the Frenchman has made 127 appearances, scoring 6 goals and 20 assists. He has also captained the team on several occasions, but has never lifted a trophy with the Premier League side. However, he has accumulated several major titles during his time at other clubs. With PSG, the player has won two Ligue 1 titles, one French Cup, two French League Cups and one French Super Cup. While at Barca, he has won one La Liga title, two Spanish Cups and one Spanish Super Cup. (stats via TRANSFERMARKT)

Digne has also represented the France national side 43 times, winning the UEFA Nations League along the way. With this addition, new manager Steven Gerrard looks to bring in some experience to the team. The Frenchman can make his debut for the Lions in their game against Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United.

What’s more to come for Aston Villa?

The deal between the two clubs did not just end at Digne. The clubs have an agreement in place for the move of Anwar El Ghazi from Villa to Everton. The arrangement was introduced as a Digne-El Ghazi swap move, but later both ended up being separate deals. The signing is in place and the Toffees will announce their new player soon. This potential move has helped in clearing funds for Aston’s budget.

The Lions are also currently in talks with Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma. If the club lands a deal for the Mali international, their future along with Gerrard’s, could be highly optimistic and bright.
