According to reports, Premier League side Aston Villa are interested in signing Brentford attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen in the summer on a free transfer.

Christian Eriksen joined Brentford in the January transfer window on a free transfer, the attacking midfielder missed the first half of the season due to a cardiac arrest he suffered at the EURO 2020 with Denmark in the summer. This attack meant that the midfielder was fitted with a pacemaker. This in turn ruled him out of featuring in Italian football and terminated his contract with Inter Milan by mutual consent.

Eriksen trained with his former side Ajax until the January transfer window. Football fans were poured with emotions as the midfielder announced his return to top-flight football. While Premier League faithful were hoping that could witness Christian Eriksen on top of his game yet again in the league.

The fairy tale signing has been nothing short of a massive success for the bees. The 30-year-old has looked on top form since making his debut for the bees. He has made a total of five appearances in the Premier League this term. In this time he has recorded one goal and one assist. (stats via Transfermarkt)

However, Christian Eriksen did sign only a six-month contract with the bees. While the bees have an option to extend the contract for another year in the summer. But a host of Premier League clubs have shown interest in the Danish midfielder.

Is Christian Eriksen a good option for Aston Villa?

90min.com have reported that Aston Villa are ‘looking into’ a move for Christian Eriksen ahead of the summer transfer window. The midfielder has also drawn interest from  Crystal Palace, Everton, Newcastle United, and West Ham United. While his former side Tottenham Hotspurs have also shown interest in his services.

Reports suggest that Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa have identified Philippe Coutinho as their top target ahead of the January transfer window. Philippe Coutinho has looked like his former self in the claret and blue shirt. Christian Eriksen and Coutinho occupy very similar positions on the football field. If the club signs Coutinho, there will be no reason for the club to waste wages on Eriksen.

There is no doubt that Brentford and Thomas Frank will be desperate to trigger the one-year contract extension clause in Eriksen’s contract as soon as possible.
