Reliable football journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Aston Villa are interested to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara in the January transfer window. Aston Villa have already brought in Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and Lucas Digne from Everton. Villa have also highly-rated Scottish youngster Kerr Smith from Dundee United.

According to reports, Steven Gerrard is now looking to add a new face in midfielder in the January transfer window. Alongside Boubacar Kamara, Aston Villa are also scouting Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. But Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is reluctant to let the Uraguian midfielder leave in the January window.

Kamara has made a total of 146 appearances for Marseille since his breakthrough into the first team. This term he has made a total of 23 appearances for Marseille in the league and Europa League. In this time he has recorded one goal in this time. (stats via Transfermarkt)

Boubacar Kamara is out of contract next summer and is set to leave next summer on a free transfer. Many clubs including Leeds United, Newcastle United and Manchester United are all after the signature of the French midfielder.

Is Boubacar Kamara a good midfield option for Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa?

Aston Villa current midfield options consist of the likes of Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey, John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson. While all the players mentioned are talented and skilled in their own ways. None of the Villa midfielders possesses the ability to sit in the middle of the park and break and recycle play.

The French midfield general has averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 0.9 clearances per game in the French top division this term. On top of that, Kamara has also averaged 0.9 key passes. He has maintained a pass accuracy of 89.9% in the league this term. (stats via Whoscored) Those stats also show the midfielders ability to break and dictate play in the centre of the park.

On top of the stats, Kamara has only missed three games through injury in the last three and a half years. This just shows how reliable the French midfield general is. Villa currently has midfielder Marvelous Nakamba on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

There is no doubt that Kamara will add a completely new dimension to the Villa midfield. But Aston Villa and Stevan Gerrard will have to have to act quickly to land the midfielder. The race to land the midfielder looks likely to stretch until the next summer transfer window.
