Aston Villa interested in signing the new ‘Paul Gascoigne’ Dan Neil

Aston Villa are linked with a move for Sunderland player Dan Neil. Many call him the new ‘Gascoigne’ because of his different dribbling technique. Neil has been an important player of his side this whole season. However, Villa wants to snatch away Sunderland’s star mid-season.

Aston Villa completed the signing of Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne, and Robin Olsen in the January transfer window. This shows that they wanted to add some experience to the side. Nevertheless, Kerr Smith is a youngster and can improve their younger side of the squad if they sign Dan Neil.

The 20-year-old has a contract with Sunderland till 2025 which will make it difficult for Aston Villa to sign the player. However, Premier League legend Steven Gerrard just might be able to lure Neil at Aston Villa using his reputation in the world of football. This can also give Neil a big chance at playing in the Premier League on a regular basis.

Moreover, Sunderland is trying to get promoted back to the Championship and Daniel Neil can play a huge role in that regard. He already has 8 assists and has scored 2 goals for his club. However, if Aston Villa does sign Neil then it puts a dent on Sunderland’s promotion chances.

What can Dan Neil offer Aston Villa?

Dan Neil mostly plays as a defensive midfielder but has also played as a central midfielder and as a left-back for Sunderland. He can provide the much-needed depth to Aston Villa to challenge for a spot in the top half of the table and also in cup competitions. Villa already have a potentially excellent squad but they need some depth to go a full season challenging for places and trophies.

He makes 1.4 tackles and 0.7 clearances per game (stats via whoscored). These numbers can improve if he takes his game to another level where he is surrounded by better players. He can screen the Villa defense and provide assurance to his fellow attackers to attack more. The defensive midfielder role has become more important in modern-day football and Neil is very much capable of doing it.

Villa have gotten a lot stronger in the past few seasons and Daniel Neil can find this offer appealing. Either Villa will have to spend a bit more or they will have to find an alternative. January was a great transfer window for Villa as they prepare for the next season.

If Aston Villa does succeed to sign the youngster then can cause some trouble to the big teams in the league. It will be harder for other teams to get a result against the Lions. Villa will have more chances in the cup competitions and also more chances of finishing in the top half of the Premier League table.
