Aston Villa keeper Lovre Kalinic is set to exit for game time

Aston Villa expects Lovre Kalinic to return to their pre-season training next week. But the 32 year old’s future is quite uncertain at Villa as he spent last 18 months on loan. Ashley Preece of Birmingham Live brought this latest news regarding the Midlands club as the transfer window is now open in full flow across the country.

The Croatian joined Villa on a four-year deal from KAA Gent in 2019. But in that time he made only 8 appearances for the club, managing to keep only 1 clean sheet. He also conceded 15 goals during that time.

It was in his debut season of 2018 – 2019 where he made a handful of apps for Villa. But later, the club benched him and he sustained a knee injury as well. This injury kept him on the sidelines and quite understandably his career for the PL club came to an end.

Aston Villa Kalinic situation

Villa loaned out Kalinic to the French club Toulouse, just within one year after joining Villa. But there too, he failed to create an impression. He made just four appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, conceding four goals with two clean sheets. The club too got relegated as they finished last in the Ligue 1 table that season.

Returning to Aston Villa for the 2020 – 2021 campaign, his competition just got even tougher. Emiliano Martinez back then joined the club from Arsenal after his stunning spell for the Gunners. He, back then, played a key role in the Emirates Stadium outfit’s FA Cup and Community Shield triumph.

Joining the Villa Park outfit, he became their instant No.1 choice in goal. As a result, the club loaned the player out again, this time to HNK Hajduk Split. There, he made a total of 35 appearances and kept 16 clean sheets in all competitions. With Robin Olsen now signing for Villa, Kalinic will go further down the pecking order and might not play again. It’s best for all parties that he will move somewhere else.
