Aston Villa ponders signing Sevilla’s Diego Carlos

Aston Villa has been exploring the possibility of signing Sevilla center-back Diego Carlos for this summer. This possibility was reported by The Athletic. Villa boss Steven Gerard is thinking of strengthening his defence for this season.

The 29-year-old has been crucial for the Sevilla side. Carlos came to the Yellow Submarine from Nantes in 2019. Moreover, he was instrumental in helping the club to win the Europa League in 2020.

He also helped them to secure next season’s Champions League qualification. However, Carlos’ achievements include winning Olympic Gold with Brazil at the Tokyo games. Carlos still has two years remaining in his contract.

Villa considers the defender as one of the top players in his respective position. However, Gerrard first needs to make some space before making some new signings. Also, he needs to clear his defence a little. Villa already have some good defenders in Tyler Mings and Chambers. However, Carlos could be a good backup to these two defenders.

What plans does Gerrard have with Aston Villa regarding transfers?

It is believed that their asking price and salary of Carlos could pose a tough for Aston Villa. In that case, Villa should be pondering over a few other options for the summer.

Gerrard internally had a meeting with team officials about bolstering his team next summer. Aston Villa wants to boost their position next season. Burnley’s James Tarkowski is another player that is being linked with Villa. The 29-year-old is out of contract this season and will be available as a free agent next term.

Villa are actively gearing up to draw big in this season’s transfer market which opens at June 10. Earlier this month, Phillipe Coutinho was announced as a permanent player from Barcelona. He was on loan at Villa from Barcelona.
