Aston Villa retain Luiz despite multiple bids by Arsenal

Douglas Luiz will remain at Aston Villa despite interest from Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Arsenal, in particular, were pushing heavily to sign the midfielder this season. They sent three bids for the player to join them in the Emirates. However, all the bids were rejected by Aston Villa who are adamant about keeping the player with them this season.

Arsenal offered £25m for the player as their final bid which was promptly rejected by Aston Villa. The reason for this sudden interest in Luiz is the injury to Elneny. The Gunners want reinforcements for the injured player. Moreover, if they want to keep up their unbeaten streak alive, they have to keep players from getting injured. Arsenal had hoped that the acquisition of Dendoncker from Wolves would soften Villa’s stand on Luiz. However, this wasn’t the case at all. Villa stood firm on this issue and refused to sell the defensive midfielder.

Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus had also expressed their interest in signing the player on the eve of the deadline day. Arsenal were also interested in signing Pedro Neto of Wolves but Wolves too did not allow their star forward to depart so late in the transfer window.

Villa manager affirms his confidence in Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa manager says that Douglas Luiz was pretty receptive to Villa’s decision to not sell him. Moreover, Gerrard also stated that this episode will not affect the player much. Speaking to SkySports, Gerrard said:

“Knowing the boy and the player, I doubt it. I’ve got confidence he’ll under the situation and the club’s decision that we didn’t want to lose a very important player and a top player so late in the window. From a personal point of view, I back the club’s decision and stance on that.
