ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa to sign Olsen for Permanent

Olsen

Aston Villa is very close to signing loanee goalkeeper Robin Olsen on permanent.

The 32-year-old Swedish international was on loan at Villa Park from As Roma. He had to be patient to get a chance under Steven Gerrard. Olsen completed the move back when Dean Smith was still in charge and he suited according to his game plan.

For Gerrard, things are different and the Swedish shot-stopper got his first chance at the end of the season. His debut was disastrous, Villa gave away a 2-0 lead in 6 minutes and conceded three by the end.

Woes not only remain there but while he was walking down the pitch he was assaulted by some city fans. The city has launched a probe to identify the individuals involved in this shameful incident.

Why Olsen?

Emi Martinez is quite a force between the sticks but villa lacks a backup and this is where Olsen comes into the scene. His experience both at domestic and international levels is perfect for the role. Olsen if signed will play as a second option as Emi Martinez looks very strong with his role.

Villa lacks a squad depth and this is one of the many reasons why Steven Gerrard is looking to bolster his squad’s depth.

According to some reports, Douglas Luiz may leave the villa and join Mourinho’s As Roma. Roma needs some midfield reinforcements and a swap between Luiz and Olsen + some cash would be more than enough to close the deal.

Gerrard has already initiated his squad overhaul and has some chances already started signing players. Coutinho is the no.1 followed by Kamara and now potentially Robin Olsen.

Gerrard knows as much as he needs youth, he also needs experience and this is what Olsen can bring to the squad. He’s someone on whom Gerrard can rely in tough times.
