Aston Villa will look to sign a defender in the transfer window and made Rangers’ Calvin Bassey their top priority. Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports dropped this major update regarding this transfer switch to Aston Villa.
Aston Villa already made a couple of key signings early in the summer transfer window. They already made Philippe Coutinho‘s loan deal from FC Barcelona a permanent one. To strengthen their midfield, they also signed Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer from Marseille.
But they won’t stop here and will continue their pursuit of reinforcing their overall squad. Accordingly, they can spend upto £150 million in this window only. Reports are incoming that the Midlands club is working hard to close a deal for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey.
Calvin Bassey a top target for Villa
Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett provided an update on Villa’s transfer target this Tuesday morning. He revealed that after Coutinho, Kamara and Carlos, adding Bassey is a ‘key’ target for them. Other than that, James Tarkowski is also a target for Villa. However, their correspondent Gregg Evans claimed that a move for him to the Midlands is higly unliekly.
Bassey had a breakthrough season in Scotland for the Ibrox Stadium outfit. He played both as a centre back and a left back, two areas where he can improve Aston Villa. Matt Targett and Ashley Young will leave the Villa Park, presumably this summer. Hence, Lucas Digne, who signed for Gerrard’s side from Everton in January will be the only senior defender in the squad. Addition of Bassey will provide ample cover to the centre and left side of defence.
Bassey can also be a contender for the starting spot. He was instrumental to Rangers run in the Europa league final. If a deal goes through, who knows, maybe a solid partnership with Carlos is awaiting for the fans of Aston Villa on the cards.
