In a recent interview, former England international and now football pundit Danny Murphy revealed that Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash made the right long-term choice by switching his nationality from England to Poland.

Danny Murphy also revealed that the Aston Villa right-back is ‘some player’. He also hailed Aston Villa’s recruitment team’s decision to sign the right-back for just £16 million back in the summer of 2020. Just like most of the Aston Villa players, Cash massively underperformed in the first half of the season.

But ever since Steven Gerrard took over, Matty Cash has looked like a completely different player. Cash has been particularly impressive going forward. The right-back has made a total of 31 appearances across all competitions this term. He had recorded just one goal in the first half of the season. But he has recorded an impressive two goals and three assists since Steven Gerrard’s arrival at the helm. (stats via Transfermarkt)

Cash’s impressive run of form has seen him draw attention from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants are willing to spend upwards of £40 million to sign the Polish right-back next summer. While Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa are willing to offer the right-back a new contract. In order to drive the price tag up or potentially keep the Polish full-back at the club beyond the next summer.

The right-back recently switched his nationalities from England to Poland. The right-back looked quite far below the right-back pecking order for the England national team. But with injuries to Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker meant that Kyle Walker-Peters was called up to the national team.

With Matty Cashy’s recent form he could have been called up to the England national team under current circumstances. But Cash recently helped the Polish national team qualify for the World Cup next season. It seems the right-back made the right decision by switching nationalities.

What did Danny Murphy say about Matty Cash?

Talking to talkSPORT about Aston Villa’s right-back Matty Cash, the football pundit said:

“He’s some player that lad. Brilliant signing. He has been absolutely terrific.”

“But you are talking about a position, unfortunately for him. Where we have some of the best players on the planet. When you talk about Kyle Walker, Reece James, Trent and Kieran Trippier. It’s bizarre having that much talent in one position. “

“So, I fully understand Cash’s decision to represent Poland.”
