Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie De Jong has been frustrating, to say the least. They have a deal in place with Barcelona, who seem to be content with moving him on. However, the Dutch midfielder is reluctant to leave for Old Trafford to reunite with Erik Ten Hag.
There was also news that Barcelona owe De Jong millions in deferred wages. The midfielder does not want to leave Barcelona until he is paid the sum. Both these factors have made the transfer saga very messy.
However, Erik Ten Hag stated before the season opener that he is content with the players at his disposal.
We want Frenkie? I don’t know. No, hey, it’s about the right players and there are many.
But I cannot give comments on a player who is under contract at another club. When we have news, we will give it. Then you work with the current squad, and you develop players who are in your current squad. In this moment we have players in that position and they perform really well.
That would be a good situation [to sign players]. But I am happy with the squad. I am happy with the signings up until now. We are working all together. I am happy with the current squad and we need the right players

Will Ten Hag Sign Any Midfielder?
However, the opening day defeat may have changed Ten Hag’s mind. The performance was abysmal, and Scott McTominay was a notable player who struggled. The Scottsman had lesser passes than David De Gea, with a measly 68% accuracy. The pre-season optimism seems to have disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Ten Hag may be looking to assess his options now. David Ornstein recently reported that the Red Devils are looking to sign Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot as an alternative to De Jong.
