Glen Johnson feels Liverpool should swoop in Bayern winger

As the summer approaches, every other club is planning their strategy for the transfer window. Meanwhile, Liverpool have been urged by Glenn Johnson to close a “sensible” deal for a Bayern Munich player. The former Chelsea man has opined that the Reds wish-list Serge Gnabry for the summer. However, Johnson’s advice might just be in consideration with the rumours about Sadio Mane wanting a Liverpool exit.

Mane has just over 12 months left on his contract, and is reportedly exploring other options. Goal claimed earlier that as a result, Liverpool are studying Gnabry’s situation at Bayern eyeing him as Mane’s replacement. Gnabry’s contract expires in the summer of 2023 as well, and the winger is yet to sign an extension. Glen Johnson feels that Liverpool should churn out a deal for Gnabry, in the similar way they signed Thiago Alcantara from Bayern.

Alcantara arrived at Liverpool for a mere £25 million from Bayern Munich. However, it would take a lot more for Liverpool to land Serge Gnabry. As compared to Thiago, Gnabry is much younger and in the prime of his career. But Johnson opines that Klopp’s team should seriously consider poaching Gnabry, who is valued at £63 million.

Glen Johnson’s advice to Liverpool about the Bayern winger

Liverpool have one of the smartest people in the job when it comes to transfers. Their deals for Fabinho, Alisson and Naby Keita for a combined fee of £150 million in a single transfer window are a proof of the same. Johnson was pointing to Liverpool’s this trait as he expects them to pull-off a transfer coup with Gnabry.

Johnson said, “I think if Liverpool can get a sensible deal done for Serge Gnabry then it would be worth doing. I don’t know what his contract situation is but if there’s a chance you could do a clever deal without a crazy transfer fee then he’s certainly got the ability to enjoy the Premier League. Obviously they’ve got fantastic players in that position, but the more you sign players like that, the more it brings out of everybody else.”

Johnson seems a bit enthusiastic about Liverpool snatching Gnabry by paying Bayern anything less than £63 million. However, he may have a point about Gnabry enjoying the Premier League. Though the winger’s earlier experience may tell a different story, his game has significantly changed. Gnabry was with Arsenal before joining Bayern Munich. However, he endured a torrid period at Arsenal, making just 18 appearances for them and scoring only once.

But Gnabry has transformed into a force to reckon since switching sides with Bayern. The winger has 62 goals and 40 assists in just 162 games for the German giants. However, Gnabry is a natural right-winger, whereas Mane plies his trade on the left. So given their exploits, Gnabry would seem a replacement of Mohamed Salah than Sadio Mane. But that might work as well since Salah is stalling over a new contract, giving signs of an exit.
