Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has committed his long-term future to the club. He has signed a new five-year contract with the club.
The 25-year-old defender joined the Reds in 2015. He has now extended his stay at Anfield until 2027. He was a regular in the heart of the defense. However, he suffered a serious knee injury on international duty which saw him struggle to start regularly.
JOE GOMEZ NEW CONTRACT WITH LIVERPOOL
The versatile Englishman in the later parts of the season would fill in for Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, before the start of the new season, Liverpool signed Calvin Ramsay as a backup at right-back. His arrival led to suggestions that Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool in the current window. Newcastle and Aston Villa were both linked with a move for Gomez.
Although, Joe Gomez has now committed his future to the reds for another five years. The defender was very happy to extend his contract. He said, “I still feel young and the best years are ahead of me. I have got more to learn and the time to do that,” he said.”I think I have the platform here to do it with the manager and the coaching staff around me and my teammates, to make sure the best years are ahead.”
THERE ARE GOING TO BE MORE CONTRACT EXTENSIONS
Jurgen Klopp has expressed his delight after the defender signed the new contract. “One of the many wonderful things about Joe is he has the experience and youth – that’s not a bad combination,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.“He has not long turned 25 but he was at the club before I was and I think after Hendo [Jordan Henderson] and Millie [James Milner] he is our longest-serving player.
However, he is not expected to be the last player to extend his contract. Liverpool are now expected to intensify their efforts to agree fresh terms with forward Diogo Jota and midfielder Naby Kieta. The club expects them to extend their contracts before the new season begins. The main aim looks like Liverpool are trying to retain the main core of the team for the future.
Joe Gomez was signed by Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015. He has since played 142 games for the club. However, he is still waiting for his first goal. The ex-Addicks man has won the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup, Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup during his time at Anfield.
