Manchester City is poised to finalize an £85 million transfer deal for RB Leipzig star Josko Gvardiol. Fresh from their historic treble-winning season, Pep Guardiola is wasting no time in bolstering the squad for the future.

According to The Secret Scout’s Twitter account, a contract agreement between Manchester City and Gvardiol is imminent. The young Croatian center-back is a priority signing for Guardiola, following the completion of the Kovacic deal. However, negotiations between City and RB Leipzig regarding the transfer fee still need to be finalized.

High Praises for Gvardiol

Josko Gvardiol, primarily a left-footed center-back who can also operate as a left-back, has caught the attention of top clubs with his remarkable performances. After facing Manchester City in the Champions League, Gvardiol had a conversation with Pep Guardiola, who commended the young defender.

Former Manchester United and City midfielder, Owen Hargreaves lauded the young defender, stating:

“I think he’ll be the best center-back in the world one day.”

Gvardiol’s impressive statistics, surpassing City defenders Manuel Akanji and Kyle Walker last season, highlight his defensive prowess. Additionally, he excels in passing, ranking in the 99th percentile among center-backs for passes attempted, progressive passing distance, and completed medium passes, aligning with Guardiola’s style of building attacks from the back.

Man City Ready to Meet the Price

Gvardiol is under contract with RB Leipzig until June 2027. Nevertheless, Manchester City are willing to invest heavily to secure his signature. The club’s financial strength allows them to consider a fee in excess of £80 million. However, Gvardiol’s existing contract reportedly includes a release clause of nearly £100 million, set to become active in the summer of 2024.

Liverpool was initially linked with a potential move for Gvardiol, the Reds have deemed his asking price too expensive. While other clubs, including Bayern Munich, have shown interest, City’s financial capability makes them the favorable candidate to negotiate a deal. Guardiola’s desire to reinforce the left-sided center-back position becomes crucial, especially if Aymeric Laporte departs.

As City looks to build upon their treble-winning season, the acquisition of Gvardiol could further solidify their status as a force to be reckoned with in Europe.
