Manchester United in talks for Leon Goretzka

Manchester United are always looking to strengthen their squad and have set their eyes on Leon Goretzka. Leon Goretzka and Bayern Munich have reopened talks over a new deal amidst links with Manchester United. In addition, if they find a new deal it would be a big blow for United.

According to Sport Bild, Manchester United have tabled a concrete offer for the player to come to Old Trafford when he becomes a free agent next June. Manchester United are very keen on signing a new midfielder as Paul Pogba has entered his last year of the contract. Reports have been suggesting that he is unlikely to stay at Manchester United.

Does Goretzka replace Pogba?

Following an impressive Euro 2020 campaign with France, Paul Pogba remains one of the most sought-after players in Europe and, to the intrigue of a number of clubs, could force a move this summer.

Goretzka and Pogba are slightly different. Pogba tends to sit deep in Man Utd’s midfield, he usually plays the role of a deep-lying playmaker. Goretzka is more of a box-to-box midfielder or a holding midfielder that could pop up in either box with important aerial challenges, tackles, and goals.

The German has scored 25 goals in 112 matches during his three seasons at Bayern Munich. Further, he has won three Bundesliga trophies, two German Cups, and the Champions League trophy in 2020.

Both players have a similar record last season. So if Goretzka were to step into United’s midfield in place of Pogba he may end up providing a similar service in terms of creating and scoring goals for the team.

Manchester United could face challenge from Real Madrid for Leon Goretzka’s Signature

Real Madrid have also joined the race for the German midfielder. Goretzka is unwilling to sign a new contract at Bayern because of low wages. Real Madrid have already signed David Alaba from Bayern and could swoop in for his teammate too.
