Matthijs De Ligt May Snub Old Boss For Rivals

According to Calcio Mercato, Liverpool is interested in signing Matthijs De Ligt from Juventus. It would indeed be a blockbuster move if the Champions League finalists can pull it off.

On the other hand, it could be a huge blow to their arch-rivals Manchester United as their incoming manager Erik Ten Hag was the one who gave De Ligt his big break at Ajax

The Dutch international is touted as one of the best young centre backs of our generation. One can well expect him to become one of the top defenders in the coming years. While at Ajax, De Ligt was only 19 years old but was still the captain of the Dutch giant. This shows the tremendous amount of trust Ten Hag has in him.

I don’t know if De Ligt is now at 60, 70 or 80 per cent of his potential, but we are talking about one of the best defenders in Europe and I have no doubt that he will soon become number one in the world in the role.

Erik Ten Hag in 2019

Partnering with his compatriot Virgil van Dijk can be a frightening prospect for any attacker in the World. Ten Hag will however not allow one of his trusted soldiers to land at Anfield easily. United are expected to be in the race as well. With the departures of Alex Tuanzabe, Phil Jones, and Victor Lindelof, defensive recruitment may be high on Ten Hag’s priority. The signing of De Ligt can be the one which shows ambition and settles their backline for years to come.

Easy Choice For De Ligt?

United will however know that it would be insanely difficult to pull off. While the financial aspect of the deal won’t hurt a club of Manchester United’s stature, the appeal would be a lot lesser. Liverpool are on an upward trajectory for the last four years, while their northern rivals are in a slump for way too long. A move to Merseyside will make sense, but it will be interesting to see if Ten Hag can convince one of his ex-players for a reunion.
