Midfielders Liverpool can sign after Thiago’s injury

Liverpool have somewhat of a crisis in midfield right now. Thiago Alcantara, arguably their best central midfielder, walked off injured during their opening game at Fulham.

Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Fabinho are a solid trio on their day  but have had fitness issues over the last few seasons. Harvey Elliot recently signed a new contract, but he plays better on the wing. Curtis Jones is another option, but his inexperience may be a factor.

The Daily Star has listed a few names the Reds can sign to ensure that the position remains covered in a challenging season.

1. Marcelo Brozovic

Brozovic has been a consistent performer for Inter Milan and the Croatian national team for the last few years. The 29-year-old plays as a deep-lying playmaker, who can contribute in both attack and defence. He has a ton of experience in big matches, and can suit Klopp’s system at Liverpool.

However, he recently signed a 4-year deal with the Nerazzurri. This makes a transfer very unlikely.

2. Matheus Nunes

Nunes is another midfielder who can improve the Liverpool midfield. The talented 23-year-old has recently made waves with Sporting CP. He has the ability to make line-breaking passes like Thiago, but can run at defenders as well.

3. Dominik Szoboszlai

The youngster from RB Leipzig epitomises the contemporary attacking midfielder. He possesses a good range of passing and fluid dribbling. He has a good work rate and is a threat from setpieces too. However, Szoboszlai is one of Leipzig’s most prized assets, and it is unlikely that they will let him leave for Liverpool without an exorbitant amount of money.

4. Thomas Soucek

The Czech international has been quite a revelation in the Premier League for West Ham. Although he is not quite as technically gifted as some of the others on the list, Soucek has a mix of power and pace which Liverpool currently lack. He is a threat in the box as well, and has scored quite a few goals at the London Stadium.

5. Jude Bellingham

The English prodigy has long piqued Klopp’s interest, and for good reason. Bellingham is the ideal match for the Liverpool midfield thanks to his exceptional blend of technical prowess and aggressiveness.

Liverpool have a history of waiting for their top targets. But it would be a major victory if they could lure the 19-year-old to Anfield in the coming weeks. However, Dortmund will demand a sky-high fee for one of the world’s best youngsters, who has expressed his desire to stay this season.
