Roma owned Robin Olsen who is currently on loan at Sheffield United is on the verge of signing for Aston Villa. The Premier League club has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the Swedish shot-stopper.

Robin Olsen currently plays as the number one goalkeeper for Championship side Sheffield United. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed that personal terms have been agreed upon between the club and Olsen. Romano further stated that the deal is not yet fully agreed upon.

The 32-year-old Swedish will be joining the Premier League outfit for the remainder of the season from Roma. The goalkeeper will likely look for a permanent move at the end of his loan spell.

Olsen will have to terminate his current loan term with Sheffield United to finalize a deal to the Premier League. The keeper picked up a rib injury whilst on international duty with Sweden. He is due to return at the end of next week. Sheffield will have the option to deny Olsen’s move to Aston Villa if they fail to find his replacement.

The Blades’ boss Paul Heckingbottom on Olsen’s Villa move:

There is potential on that, but nothing as yet. It’s one of the situations that we are monitoring.

As it stands now, nothing is happening.

I know there has been speculation, but the only way he can go, because the loan is in our hands, is if we do have a replacement.

What would Robin Olsen bring in the Villa side?

Robin Olsen would be Villa’s third signing of the January transfer window. They have already signed Phillip Coutinho on loan from Barcelona, Digne from Everton. Their Chief executive Christian Purslow revealed Villa’s plans of doing further business this month.

Villa currently sits 13th on the table after their recent 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League. They have improved since the arrival of new manager Steven Gerrard.

Robin Olsen is a veteran goalkeeper who will bring experience to the Villa side. He will be coming into Villa Park as a backup for first-choice Martinez. It is hard to imagine Olsen dethroning Martinez, he is likely to make appearances in the cup games. But the Swedish might end up providing competition for the Argentine international.

The Swedish shot-stopper joined Roma in July 2018. Since moving to the Italian capital, Olsen has had three loan spells. Including his stint at Everton in the 2020-21 season. Despite being at Roma for more than three years now, Olsen has only managed to play 35 games for the Italian side.

Olsen’s arrival could mean a potential exit for Steven Gerrard’s current second-choice keeper Jed Steer. Steer has only featured once for Villa this season, their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in September.
