Back in April, Gerrard had announced that he will appoint his long-term skipper for Aston Villa in the next season. Now, he will announce his decision ahead of Aston Villa’s opener against Bournemouth. However, Gerrard has insisted that the spot for the captain is still up for grabs this season. Moreover, there are a few players on his short list as well. However, he has not ruled out the prospect of giving the captaincy to a new face this summer.

Tyrone Mings was handed the captain’s armband following the transfer of JackGrealish to Manchester City. Moreover, Mings retained his captaincy after Dean smith’s sacking and Gerrard’s arrival last season. Now, according to Steven Gerrard, Mings is one of the strongest candidates for the role of the captain of Aston Villa. Mings has been a very vocal and calm-headed leader in the club’s pre-season tour of America.

Steven Gerrard wants leaders in the Aston Villa squad

Gerrard has chosen several players to captain the team in the pre-season. Mings, Emi Martinez, John McGinn, and Ashley Young have all worn the captain’s armband in the pre-season. However, Gerrard is insisting that nothing has been decided as of yet. He is still deciding on who should captain the side this summer. Speaking previously, Gerrard said:

“It’s still up for grabs. We’re not far away from deciding because we’re two weeks out from the start of the new season but there’s two or three in the running for it.

Gerrard has also not ruled out giving the armband to someone new this season. He insists that the captain should be someone who will give his all every minute of every day”. He is also looking for a player who “set high standards for the team every day. Gerrard said:

“We are still working that out. I still won’t rule out the option of someone coming in, who I know, who is also capable of being in the running. It is something I am analysing really closely now and I will make a decision some time during pre-season.”
