Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is pondering over the possibility of signing Luis Suarez from Atletico Madrid. The Uruguayan striker has already announced that he would be leaving Wanda Metropolitano next season. Suarez also bid an emotional farewell to the Madrid side after their last game in the La Liga last weekend.
He was phenomenal with Atletico in his first season in 2020. His goals helped the side in winning the La Liga title after seven years. However, this season he was benched frequently by Diego Simeone and played the role of a super-sub occasionally.
Several MLS sides have shown interest in the striker besides Villa. Moreover, Suarez had an eventful and often controversial spell in the Premier League when he played for Liverpool. Moreover, the Telegraph reports that his preference is to remain in Spain.
If he decides to sign for Villa, he would have the chance to pair up with his former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Moreover, Gerrard is set to oversee rebuilding work in Villa this season. Therefore, Suarez can be part of that rebuilding programme.
What did Steven Gerrard say about Suarez?
Recently in an interview with Gary Neville he was asked to pick between Fernando Torres and Suarez and he said. I’d say Suarez just because he had everything and, I mean, how long have you got to describe him? I played with some top players, you know your [Xabi] Alonsos of this world, [Javier] Mascheranos, Torress, but Suarez was just different.
Moreover, Suarez would also enjoy reunions with his former teammate Phillipe Coutinho. Coutinho recently made his deal permanent with Villa. Gerrard is said to have kept in regular touch with Suarez. Recently, he even described him as the best player he has played with, in Liverpool.
