According to reports, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is willing to let go of French full-back Frederic Guilbert at the end of the season to boost his summer transfer budget.
Frederic Guilbert is currently out on loan in the French League one with Strasbourg. The French full-back was allowed to rejoin the French side on loan on deadline day last August by former manager Dean Smith. He did make an appearance in the EFL Cup for Aston Villa this term. He also recorded an impressive goal and an assist in the game. (stats via Transfermarkt)
Last term the full-back was particularly impressive during his six months loan with Strasbourg. The fullback recorded an impressive one goal and four assists in just 13 league appearances last term. But the full-back has been in decent form since his move to the League one outfit. Guilbert had made a total of 25 appearances for Strasbourg across all competitions this term. In this time he has recorded four assists in all competitions. (stats via Transfermarkt)
Frederic Guilbert did have a good start to life in the Premier League under former manager Dean Smith. The French international made a total of 29 appearances in all competitions in the 2019-20 season. In this time, he recorded two goals and two assists. But he was suddenly frozen out of the side by Dean Smith and did not make a single league appearance for Aston Villa in the 2022-21 season.
According to Birmingham Live, Steven Gerrard has already made up his mind and has already agreed to let the French full-back go in the summer transfer window.
Is Stevan Gerrard making the right choice by letting Frederic Guilbert go?
There is no doubt that the Premier League side can get in a good transfer fee for the French full-back. Aston Villa reportedly paid a transfer fee close to £5 million to bring the right-back to the English game. The club would certainly be hoping to make a profit on the £5 million they spend three years earlier.
But reports suggest that Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are keen to sign Aston Villa and Polish right-back Matty Cash in the summer transfer window. With Steven Gerrard set to potentially lose his first-choice right-back this summer. It may be a smart move to keep their options open and not agree on any sales before the summer transfer window.
