Legendary striker Luis Suarez could move to Aston Villa this summer, Givemesport understands. Aston Villa manager and ex-teammate Steven Gerrard is a huge fan of the Uruguayan marksman, and a reunion could be on the cards.
Suarez is coming to the end of his Atletico Madrid contract. The ex-Barcelona man scored 32 goals in 67 appearances for the Los Colchoneros as he helped them to their first La Liga title in 6 years. He formed an incredible partnership with Steven Gerrard in his playing days, especially in the 2013/14 season.
Suarez scored 31 goals, which is widely regarded as one of the finest individual seasons in Premier League history. It would be not at all surprising to see Gerrard moving for him, even though Suarez may have slowed down in recent years.
Younger Alternatives to Suarez?
There, however, may be concerns about the Uruguayan’s age and injury concerns. In such a case, Villa are also exploring a deal for Canadian Johnathan David. The Lille striker is 22 years old and has scored 28 goals for Lille in the last two seasons. He made 37 appearances for them in their title-winning season last year. He is a wanted man, with Arsenal interested too.
Suarez’s wages may be a hindrance too. He currently earns 260k per week, and unless he takes a huge pay cut, a deal may be difficult for the Villains. Johnathan David presents a much more economical option.
A return of El Pistolero to England is an exciting prospect for Villa fans and other neutrals as well. The Premier League boasts some of the finest strikers in the world. Suarez will fit right among the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Halland and Romelu Lukaku. But the various concerns listed above may allow for some scepticism. Johnathan David is a safer option with a high upside. The rise of Ollie Watkins can also be a reason to strengthen other positions.
