After the title loss to Manchester City, Liverpool’s misery was further compounded by the injury of midfielder Thiago Alcantara. The Spaniard went off the pitch just before half-time. Jurgen Klopp further told the press that he did not have good news to share.
Thiago has been one of the key members of the Reds squad in recent weeks. He had a scrumptious assist for Sadio Mane against Wolves on Sunday but did not feature in the second half. James Milner came in his place, as Liverpool came back from behind to secure a 3-1 victory.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Jurgen Klopp cut a pessimistic figure.
I think he’ll be out of the final but I don’t know. He’s limping, so it’s maybe not the best sign. Lower part of the body. I know what it is but don’t want to say
Other Concerns
Other than Thiago, Liverpool is also facing the prospect of being without Fabinho. The Brazilian defensive midfielder went off after half an hour against Aston Villa and has not featured since. He should be ready though if reports are to be believed.
Another notable absentee will be striker Divock Origi. The Belgian missed the win against the Wolves and has played his final game for the club. He has a cult-hero status at Anfield, owing to the number of important he has scored in recent times. The brace against Barcelona and another goal in the final of 2018/19 come to mind immediately. He was facilitated for his service after the game on Sunday.
The midfield battle is of paramount importance in the UCL final. The famed KCM trio of Real Madrid is one of the best in the world, and the press resistance of someone like Thiago Alcantara would have been a priceless asset for Liverpool. For neutrals as well, the going together of some of the most technically gifted midfielders in the world in Luka Modric and Thiago Alcantara would have been a treat.
Unfortunately for them and Liverpool fans, things will be different on Saturday.
