Villa should add ‘quality’ around Coutinho – Tim Sherwood

Former Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood claims that they have a formidable squad now to compete. But he also pointed out where the Steven Gerrard led side falling short.

Sherwood mentioned that both Philippe Coutinho and Steven Gerrard joined a prestigious footballing institution, praising them. But he also wants the Liverpool legend to add quality around the Brazilian playmaker to boost his abilities.

Coutinho recently made his switch from FC Barcelona to Aston Villa a permanent one. In the recently concluded season, he was on loan at the club. Now in the summer transfer window, Villa made his move permanent by paying the Catalan giants just £17 million. In 2018, Barca bought him for £142 million.

Other than that, the club also completed the signing of Boubacar Kamara, Ludwig Augustinsson, Diego Carlos and Robin Olsen. But the former Villa boss still believes they need more signing to compete at the top level.

What Sherwood said on where Villa is lacking depth

While speaking on behalf of 888sport, Tim Sherwood made the following comments:

“With Coutinho, you have an incredible situation where you have a high-profile player, who has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, who is playing for a manager who previously sat next to him in the dressing room. So, Stevie has brought him in because he knows what a great mentality he has.”

“I’m telling you, when Stevie went there, and Coutinho, when you go to that club it’s not until you’re there that you realise how big that club is. It’s a huge football club.”

“Coutinho obviously loves his manager enough to go there full-time and the squad has been improved but they still need a few more players of such quality that they give him the ball in the right areas more often. He can be a thorn in any team’s side.”
