Barcelona midfielder Nico is reportedly set to leave on loan this summer.

Barcelona, Six Sports

Barcelona are reportedly going to loan out midfielder Nico for this season. Xavi also thinks a loan move would be a great option for the young midfielder.

The Catalan giants are well stacked in midfield this season. They are also reportedly looking to add more players to the squad.

WHY DO BARCELONA WANT TO LOAN OUT NICO THIS SUMMER?

According to reports, Barca were all set to keep Nico for this season. He was all set to be in the squad as a backup to Sergio Busquets. However, it looks like Barcelona and Xavi have changed their mind. They are now open to loaning out the midfielder for this season. However, only under one condition. The La Liga giants will only loan him out if he extends his contract until 2025.

Wolves and Valencia have been linked with a loan move for the midfielder. However, Valencia leads the race to sign Nico on a loan deal. The move to Valencia will benefit all parties as he will regularly play games in La Liga for another top team in the league. The midfielder is also open to a move to the La Liga side for the season.

WHAT PROMPTED XAVI TO A SUDDEN CHANGE OF DECISION FOR NICO

According to reports, the reason is veteran midfielder Miralem Pjanic. The Bosnian was on loan to Besiktas last season. He was expected to leave Barcelona. However, the midfielder is now going to stay as Xavi and other staff have been impressed with his technical abilities. Hence, Pjanic is going to stay at the club this summer. This results in Nico playing very less games this season.

The club also currently have Frenkie De Jong on their books. Barcelona also have signed Franck Kessie on a free transfer from A.C Milan. They are also trying to sign Bernardo Silva from Manchester City. Hence, the potential arrival of Silva is going to limit Nico’s game time at Camp Nou. Hence, the decision to loan him out makes sense for all parties.

Nico is very highly rated by Xavi and the club. He was also there in the first team squad last season with his academy teammate Gavi. However, injuries tampered with his further progress. Although, he has managed to impress Xavi when he has played.
