Besiktas Fume After Tosun Wage Demands

Turkish club Besiktas are not happy after Cenk Tosun demanded 3 million in wages a year. The Everton striker is coming to the end of his contract at Goodison Park. There is no keenness on either side for a contract extension

Sportswitness suggest that the move to his former club may now be in jeopardy with these demands. A return was in the books for months, but things look difficult with this latest development.

Tosun claims that since he is arriving on a free, he should get higher wages. But Besiktas President Ahmet Nur Çebi did not share his sentiments. He reportedly told Tosun’s agent that: “I have given a promise to him, but those numbers don’t exist anymore. If he accepts 1.5 million euros, let him come. If not, I wish him success in his football life.

This is a direct continuation of his recent press conference where he claimed that there is a serious difference between them in terms of wages, and it seems that figure is €1.5m.

Tosun Past and Future

Tosun has perhaps had an underwhelming career in England. The striker has scored only 10 goals in the 5 years. That is remarkably low for a striker who was hyped for big things after his 20 goals in the league in 2016/17. This impressive campaign helped him bag a 30 million move to the Toffees in 2018.

A German by birth, he switched his allegiance to Turkey after representing Germany at the youth levels. A lanky centre forward who likes to use his physicality, Tosun can be a handy option to pursue an alternate, Route 1 strategy. His lack of edge in the final third is a big red flag for many clubs, though.

One can easily understand Beiktas’ reservations. The Turkish giants have had a poor season. They would want to improve their squad in more economical ways. Perhaps they can find cheaper and more prolific strikers in the market, if the stalemate with Tosun persists.
