Newcastle United made a shrewd start to their summer transfer window.  They brought in a Nick Pope and Sveve Botman to bolster their backline. However, attacking signings have been difficult to complete.

While Eddie Howe has already stated that the Magpies have been looking at a few forward players. The club has stressed that they will not have a limitless budget. Although Newcastle have wealthy new owners, they are bound by FFP regulations.

Yet, they remain interested in signing Leicester’s James Maddison. The English playmaker is one of the finest players outside the traditional Big 6. Other than them, Tottenham Hotspur are also in the mix to sign the former Norwich City star. However, they seem to be more interested in Nicolo Zanilo at the moment.

Newcastle bid 40 million Pounds to secure his signature. However, this was rejected by the Midlands outfit.

Howe on Maddison to Newcastle

When asked about Maddison, Eddie Howe maintained that he is not speaking about players of other clubs. He however said that the Magpies is looking to make some additions to the squad.

I am not going to talk about any individual players. I have respect for them and their club, but we’re working hard to try and add to the group.

We are acting in the market and we will wait to see if we can add players before the window shuts. The pool of players we’re looking at is quite small. It is not a huge amount of names which is why the deals have become difficult.

On the other hand, Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Leicester ruled out the sale of Maddison. He was adamant that the club had no intention of parting with their “best assets”.

We’re in a situation where we need to move some players out but that doesn’t mean getting rid of anyone, our best assets.
